Course overview

English Studies at Nottingham is one of the widest ranging degree courses in the country. It aims to introduce students to the range of disciplines within English, including literature, language, medieval studies and drama.

Year one

You are introduced to the range of disciplines within English, including English literature from its origins to the present day, modern English language, medieval studies (including old and middle English) and drama, through core modules. Alongside these, you will take Academic Community, taught in small tutorial groups, to introduce key issues and skills relevant to university study in general and to English studies in particular. You can also choose from a range of subsidiary modules offered both by the School and by other Departments.

Year two

You will take core modules to develop the areas of English literature, language and medieval studies, as well as a core module in drama. Alongside these you will have a choice of literary period options to explore how and why literature can be read in terms of an historical 'age' or 'epoch'.

Year three

You may choose from a wide range of specialist modules. Module options offered in the past have included single-author studies, genre studies and period studies in literature, topics in language such as sociolinguistics or English language teaching and work on performance and theatre, all giving you the chance to study in smaller groups with an expert in the field. You also have the opportunity of writing a dissertation on a subject of your choice.

By the end of the course

You will have developed vital skills including creative thinking, critical analysis and personal insight, developing and sustaining a reasoned argument, initiative, leadership skills, performance skills, time management, and communication skills.
