Course overview

This course combines the study of Latin language and literature with the opportunity to study English language, literature and drama from old English to the present day. In Latin, you begin a programme of intensive language study from the first year designed to bring your proficiency up to degree level.

Year one

In English Studies, you have a choice of three core modules from the areas of English language, modern English literature, medieval studies and drama. In Latin, you begin a programme of intensive language study designed to bring your proficiency up to degree level and take a core module introducing Roman literature, art and history, along with a first year in-depth study.

Year two

In English, you will choose core modules to develop your studies in at least two areas of the discipline. You will also have the opportunity to choose one literary period option, to explore how and why literature can be read in terms of an historical 'age' or 'epoch'. You will continue with Latin modules at an appropriate level and choose from a wide range of optional modules on the literature, art, history and society of the ancient world.

Year three

You choose from a wide range of modules enabling you to specialise in key areas of English Studies. Joint honours students enjoy the same wide range of final year options in English Studies as single honours. As well as continuing Latin at Advanced level, you can either choose to pursue your interests in a dissertation or take a Special Subject, which involves detailed, in-depth study of a particular topic (taught in seminars), or to take further optional modules.

By the end of the course

Your language skills will have developed to degree level and you will have a broad knowledge of Latin and English Literature. Your transferable skills will include the ability to communicate effectively, to think and study independently, and to construct a logical argument. These skills will prepare you for a wide range of careers.
