Course overview
This course combines the study of the literature, society, art and culture of classical Greece and Rome with the opportunity to study English language, literature and drama from old English to the present day. No previous knowledge of ancient languages is required and the study of Greek or Latin is not required, but may be undertaken as part of this course.Year one
Year one is a qualifying year, which means that you must pass it, but the results do not count towards your final degree. For Classical Civilisation, you will study two core modules introducing the history and culture of Greece and Rome, and an in-depth module on one topic (e.g. Alexander). Beginners' language or Classics and Popular Culture are optional.
In English Studies you have a choice of three core modules from the areas of English language, modern English literature, medieval studies and drama.
Year two
Part I of the degree is weighted at 40% of the final assessment. You will demonstrate a greater assurance of working at degree level, and direct aspects of your study with some measure of independence. In Classical Civilisation, you combine a wide range of optional modules exploring ancient literature, art and history, with an extended source study, to prepare you for third year dissertation work. In English, you will choose core modules to develop your studies in at least two areas of the discipline. You will also have the opportunity to choose one literary period option, to explore how and why literature can be read in terms of an historical 'age' or 'epoch'.
Year three
Part II of the degree is weighted at 60% of the overall assessment. At the end of year three, you are expected to take initiative in your work and have some independence of judgement. In Classics, you will either develop and pursue your own interests through a 10,000-word dissertation in Classical Civilisation or take a Special Subject which involves detailed, in-depth study of a particular topic.
In English, you choose from a wide range of modules specialising in key areas of the subject. You have the same wide range of third year options in English Studies as single honours.
By the end of the course
You will have explored the different approaches to literature over two millennia and the connections between classical culture and English literature. You will have tailored your degree to your own interests and will have carried out in-depth study in specific areas. You will have developed transferable skills including independent critical thinking, communication skills, the ability to construct a logical argument, and to organise and manage your own work and development.Website
