Course overview

On this course you will follow core modules in English Studies and in Serbian/Croatian language and literature, providing you with an introduction to a culture within Europe that is distinctly different. As well as spending the third year abroad, you will also take part in a special two-week subsidised course in an area where Serbian or Croatian is spoken.

Year one

In English Studies, you have a choice of three core modules from the areas of English language, modern English literature, medieval studies and drama. In Serbian/Croatian, you take special introductory language modules and modules on culture, history, cinema and literature. In the summer, you take part in a special subsidised course in an area where Serbian or Croatian is spoken.

Year two

In English, you will choose core modules to develop your studies in at least two areas of the discipline. You will also have the opportunity to choose one literary period option, to explore how and why literature can be read in terms of an historical 'age' or 'epoch'. In Serbian/Croatian, you take language modules leading up to the year abroad and further options in literary and cultural studies.

Year three

Year three is spent in a Serbian or Croatian-speaking country.

Year four

In English, you choose from a wide range of modules, specialising in key areas of the subject. In Serbian/Croatian, you use your language skills in high-level modules and apply the skills and knowledge acquired earlier in the course to specialised modules. There is an optional fast-track module for learning Slovene.

By the end of the course

You will have reached a high level of linguistic expertise and be able to use Serbian/Croatian in increasingly sophisticated contexts. Your international experience will prove to employers that you are adaptable, independent and able to cope in challenging situations. Your transferable skills will include the ability to communicate effectively, think independently and construct a logical argument.
