  • Required subjects: none; school leavers should have three A levels at grade C but applications are welcome from those without formal or recent qualifications. All applicants must attend an interview and provide a written piece and two references as advised by the School of Education. If English is your second language, a minimum IELTS of score of 6.5 (with 6.0 on the written test), or equivalent, is required.
  • Extended Project: We welcome the introduction of the Extended Project and would encourage you to undertake one as it will help you develop independent study and research skills and ease the transition from school/college to higher education. Completion of an Extended Project will not, however, be a requirement of any offer made.

Creative and Professional Writing

Course overview

This course offers a general introduction to the field of creative writing and the opportunity to develop your own creativity, knowledge and critical judgement. It includes modules on writing fiction, poetry and the short story, as well as others focused on aspects of creative development, creative reading and writing for particular markets. You will be required to complete core modules, designed to develop your skills, to support your learning, and to help you engage with methodologies and approaches appropriate to the discipline. To complete each level, you choose modules from an extensive list. All the tutors are practising writers and specialist teachers of creative and professional writing.

Level one (Certificate 120 credits)

You will take one compulsory module - Creative Writing: A Foundation Course - and you will undertake a further 105 credits chosen from an extensive range of electives, eg Writing Fiction/Poetry; Writing a Short Story; Writing for Magazines; Writing for Radio/Film; Editing Skills; Practical Skills; and, Contemporary English Usage. Up to 20 credits of study can be chosen from the Combined Studies programme in a different subject area.

Level two (Diploma 120 credits + 120 credits carried forward from the Certificate)

You will take one compulsory module - Writing and Editing (Intermediate) - and you will complete a further package of elective modules that offer you the opportunity to develop in key areas of writing practice.

Level three (BA 120 credits + 240 credits carried forward from the Diploma and Certificate)
