Course overview
This course is designed for students looking for degree-level study
of fine art on a part-time basis. The structure of the award offers a
uniquely flexible route to complete a degree. Each stage usually
takes two years, with students attending one day per week. The
course concentrates on student development through a
contemporary response to fine art media. This includes drawing,
painting, print, digital media, sculpture and photography.
Contextual, theoretical and professional studies support studiobased
learning. A common approach of critical enquiry, dialogue
and reflection runs throughout the course.
Level 1 (years 1 & 2 - 120 credits)
Creative Development; Visual Perception; Two- and Three- dimensional Media; Researching and Writing about art; 20th-Century Art History and Theory; and a broad range of elective modules including life drawing, print and photography
Level 2 (years 3 & 4 - 240 credits)
Media and Drawing Workshops; Studio Practice; Psychology and Philosophy of the Arts; Approaches to Media and Content; Exploring Genre-based Content; Exploring Metaphor as Content; Contemporary Art Theory; and a range of elective modules including Art as Books & Multiples, Etching & Intaglio
Level 3 (years 5 & 6 - 360 credits)
Contextual Studies; Professional Development; Research and Development in Fine Art; Negotiated Study; Studio Practice and Exhibition, concluding with the final degree show
By the end of the course
You will have developed your own independent contemporary art
practice. You will have progressed from structured, tutor-led modules
to student-directed study and you will have developed your
contextual knowledge and critical ability. Through the study of art
theory and professional practice you will complete the course with
the broad range of skills needed for the variety of options available
for your ongoing professional development.
