Studying abroad

Global perspective

Within a global economy, employers increasingly value overseas experience. That’s why The University of Nottingham has such an extensive network of exciting exchange links for you to take advantage of.

Whether it’s spending a semester in Melbourne or Hong Kong through the Universitas 21 scheme, an academic year in Italy or Spain through the Erasmus scheme, or attending a summer school in South Korea, the rich personal experience that students bring back with them to the UK is top of their list when they evaluate their time spent overseas.

At Nottingham there are a number of schemes you could take part in and we encourage you to spend some time looking at these pages and visiting our website at www.nottingham.ac.uk/international/exchanges for the latest information.

Erasmus European exchange

The Erasmus programme is a European Commission initiative, which provides support for a range of collaborative activities between universities and businesses across Europe, including student exchange. Most academic Schools at The University of Nottingham have student exchange agreements within the Erasmus programme. These provide students with the opportunity to take part of their University of Nottingham degree at a partner institution in Europe. Around 180 of our students study at our 200+ European partners each year.

Alternatively, students can undertake work placements as part of the Erasmus scheme and also receive funding from the EU.

More study abroad opportunities

Besides the semester and academic year options, there are many other study abroad opportunities that University of Nottingham students are involved with each year. Within the Universitas 21 network there is an annual summer school for undergraduate students as well as an annual undergraduate research conference. Students can participate in these events in groups or as individuals. Details are available from the Universitas 21 website:

We also offer students the opportunity to take part in international summer campuses and international projects. Since 2005 students from the School of Sociology and Social Policy have had the opportunity to take part in the Global Village Project in Jordan, in collaboration with the British Council, Amman, and the Jordanian Hashemite Fund for Human Development (JOHUD). The project allows Nottingham students to undertake community work in and around Amman for four weeks. The students have also been able to participate in a special course in Youth Leadership for Global Governance run by the United Nations University/International Leadership Institute.

Furthermore, in South Korea our students can attend an international summer campus at Korea University, while Shanghai Jiao Tong University invites our students to participate in a five-week Chinese language summer school. Because of our partnerships with these universities, the tuition fees are waived for University of Nottingham students taking part.

Inter-campus exchange in Malaysia and China

If you are studying for a degree at The University of Nottingham which is also offered at one of our campuses in either China or Malaysia, you will have the opportunity to spend up to a year of your degree studying at one of these campuses.

The University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus

Students at our Malaysia Campus have the opportunity to take one or two semesters of the second year of their degree programme at Nottingham. Similarly, students in the UK who are taking degree programmes that are also available in Malaysia can apply to take one or two semesters there. The Malaysia Campus offers UK students the opportunity to live overseas while studying in an English language university and following a curriculum that follows similar pathways to Nottingham.
